Legion Uniform

What is the American Legion uniform?

This is a great question, as more Legionnaires are getting involved with our meetings and programs.  I had to get use to the idea of wearing headgear indoors, where this is strictly prohibited in the military.

“A legionnaire is considered to be in uniform if wearing an official American Legion cap.” (Officers Guide and Manual of Ceremonies)

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at americanlegionpost287@aol.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

No - Please come with or with out Legion cap.

Yes, however, the cap must be taken off prior to the meeting, and not donned again until the meeting concludes.

We can help you get started with this at the Post. Basically, you go to https://emblem.legion.org/uniform_caps/legion.asp.

This is “Emblem Sales” where we get all our legion stuff.

The type Legion Cap we order at Post 287:

  • “City”
  • “Lined”
  • “Regular Crown”
  • Left-sided lettering = “SAVANNAH”
  • Post # = “287”

Cost at this time is $57.00

These guidelines apply to both state and national level meetings.

Bottom-line: no blue jeans.

National Adjutant Daniel S. Wheeler just put out a letter answering this question:  Subject: Official Dress for National-Level American Legion and SAL Events

The official dress for national-level American Legion and SAL events is as follows. Definitions appear at the bottom. Commission chairmen and national staff should ensure the widest possible dissemination of this information.

Meetings:

  • All Commission and Committee Meetings: Business casual.  Those preferring to wear business dress may do so.
  • National Executive Committee Meetings, audience: Business casual.  Those preferring to wear business dress may do so.
  • National Executive Committee Meetings, dais: Business dress.
  • National Convention, audience: Business casual.  Those preferring to wear business dress may do so.
  • National Convention, stage appearances: Business dress.

Meals:

  • National Commander’s Banquet in Honor of Distinguished Guests (national convention): Business dress, except for the head table where dress is formal.
  • National Commander’s Dinner in Honor of the National Executive Committee (Spring and Fall meetings): Business casual, except for the head table, where dress is business dress.
  • For all other official national-level meal events: Business casual.

Definitions:

  • Business dress: Shirt, tie and jacket and appropriate parallel dress for women
  • Business casual: Trousers and collared polo shirt – preferably Legion polo – for men and appropriate parallel dress for women
  • Formal: Black tie
